First Coffee Maker
Categories: Coffee History
History shows that the first coffee percolator was invented by a metalsmith named Laurens in Paris France in late 1818. A few years later in 1822, another French inventor named Louise Bernard Babaut, released what is believed to be the first expresso machine. By 1850, other inventors would release their version of coffee making convenience devices to include such methods involving glass globes, vacuum or piston coffeemakers, grinder and roasters.
For example, in 1840 James Napier of England created a coffee making vacuum pot that consisted of two detachable glass globes. Water in the lower globe boils and the vapor is forced into the upper globe where coffee was brewed. Once the pot was removed from the heat source, the lower globe would cool down and create a vacuum that pulled the brewed coffee down.
On Dec 26, 1865, James Mason, an inventor patented the first American coffee percolator in the United States. In 1923, the British company Manning Bowman Co. released what is believed to be the first electric coffee percolator to the European market. The British were known for their coffee drinking and were believed to have more coffee houses than any other country in the world.
Later, in 1963 the Braun company released the first stove-top percolator to the World market. By 1965, they released an electric version which was designed for business, yet the unit permanently changed the way people made coffee at the office and home.
While the Braun coffee maker was the first in the market for commercial use, it was not the first to hit the kitchen counter of the average American citizen.
In 1972, Mr. Coffee was launched by Joe DiMaggio and the machine became one of the most widely sold kitchen appliances during the 1970s and into 1980s. Finally, people were able to fill a separate water tank, put coffee in a filter basket, connect the machine and have their coffee within minutes. The filter system kept grounds out of the finished coffee and a new way of completing a daily task was established.
